SAFETY RESTRAINT SYSTEMS

Safety Restraint System in any vehicle is a sophisticated piece of electronics. The primary focus of this training will be on diagnostics, repairs and most importantly on safety for technicians working on the systems and the safety of the car’s occupants.

QUICK FACTS

COURSE ID: SRS1-1
DURATION: 1 DAY

Prerequisites: It is prefered that you have completed AED, no matter what level of experience or previous training systems.
Equipment: This training is scan tool and scope based.  Please bring your own scope and scan tool or if you don’t have one, AECS can provide one for the training seminar.

Quick Overview

Comprehensive Overview

Transition
A little bit of background of what used to be commonplace on the road and track. A little bit of science about deceleration and force on a person involved in a car crash.

Reasons
We’ll touch on reasons for the safety systems to be part of a WoF inspection procedure and why in some countries, wearing a seat belt is not necessary. We look beyond the SRS and see which systems in the car are affected when SRS inflation occurs.

System Overview
We’ll discuss what components are part of the SRS system and divide the system into 4 parts, control unit, sensors, actuators and wiring, for diagnostic reasons. We’ll take a look at wiring diagrams and communication with other ECU’s in the car with scan tools.

Safety
We teach you about power back up in the ECU and power down for the safety of the technician. We check out several G force sensors and how they can become unstable after a crash, even when the airbags have not been inflated.  We’ll discuss how to stop unintended inflation for driver safety and talk about the role of seat belt switches and seat pad sensors.

Seat Belt & Airbag Ignitors
We’ll teach you about ignitors and the danger unused sodium azide (explosive charge) poses if it touches your skin (technician safety). Also, what gasses escape when the airbag inflates (occupant safety) and how to carry and store unused airbags and seatbelt tensioners and how to deploy airbags in a potentially scrapped car.

Wiring Loom
We’ll look at what damaged airbag inflation can do to an SRS wiring harness. We’ll show you how to safely hook up an airbag and wiring loom after the parts have been disconnected. Included is typical clock spring failures and how to test and set up a clock spring in a vehicle.

Scantool Diagnostics
We will discuss live data from the scan tool and what this means in regards to the SRS system.  We will look at this across several brands as well as scan tool actuator testing.

Scope Diagnostics
We will show you how to make simple and quick measurements to determine the airbag resistance on an SRS system and will include showing you the ignitor fault codes that will determine trigger levels.

Customer Assistance
Lastly, it is important for you to provide information to your own customers. We’ll discuss what you can share with your customers to stay safe and how to increase occupant safety.
